This autumn the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) are delighted to announce that co-founder and Academic Director Professor Catherine Holloway will be guest editor for a special addition of the online journal Nature, that aims to explore groundbreaking innovations in the design, development, and implementation of wearable technologies that enhance mobility and independence for people with disabilities.

Nature is a weekly international journal publishing peer-reviewed research in all fields of science and technology with emphasis on originality, interdisciplinary interest and surprising conclusions. This issue will focus on people with limited mobility, due congenital disability, aging, injury or medical conditions, and how assistive devices allow for greater normality in their everyday life.

We have already seen how technological advances in robotics, flexible electronics and sensing amongst other research directions are now contributing to a new generation of devices with improved performance and comfort, enabling greater independence for those individuals who need them.

This special issue will provide a unique opportunity to explore emerging solutions and their potential to change lives.

The collection will reflect the variety of different research directions towards wearable devices for monitoring, rehabilitating, restoring and even augmenting physiological movement – to support high tech advances as well as innovative yet frugal assistive devices with the potential to improve mobility and transform lives.

The collection also aims to bring together researchers and other practitioners working in different ways towards similar goals with the aim of creating practical solutions for improving mobility and transforming lives

"Rapid innovation in wearable devices is already changing lives, with assistive technologies for assisted mobility being developed at lower costs than ever before. New technologies are driving the evolution of affordable and accessible solutions, this special edition of Nature provides an important platform to showcase emerging research and innovative solutions."

Guest editor, Professor Catherine Holloway - the co-founder and Academic Director of GDI Hub and Professor of Interaction Design and Innovation at UCL, as well as the co-director of the WHO Collaborating Center on Assistive Technology
